Welcome to Sitges!
This is by no means a definitive guide, so apologies if we have
left anyone out
but it is a rough guide to where you can find
the girls of Sitges, as well as some of the great things you can
do.
SITGES
Bars
Most bars in Sitges are late night bars. They open all day and the
licenses go on to 3am. There are also different licensing hours
for bars and clubs, some go on to 3am, others don't even open until
2.30 am or so, so be prepared - Spanish girls tend to go out late
and stay out late!
Marypili on Carrer Joan Tarrida is a great focal
point for Spanish resident lesbians and tourists, with good music,
drinks and excellent coffee. The bar is open every day from midday
till 3am and it has a pavement terrace on which to relax and watch
the world go by. Owners Michi (who speaks great English) and Sonia
know most of what is going on here in Sitges as well as in Barcelona.
Blues Bar is on Carrer 1er de Maig (known locally
as Sin Street) and is just round the corner from Marypili. It has
good music, a pool table and a local crowd of women after 1pm.
If you fancy a little cabaret show, you could try El Piano
(Sant Bonaventura, 37). The guys are fun and perform musical classics
from West End shows.
There is also a groovy summer bar located on the beach at Platja
de la Barra (past the central gay beach and in the direction of
the Terramar Hotel) with decking and ambient vibe music. The bar
provides a service to your beach lounger or table and is open from
midday till 8pm.
A relaxing bar and garden can be found at the Hotel Romantic,
and if you want to watch the world of Sitges go by, park yourself
at Pay Pay, on Sin Street (1er de Maig), the cheesiest
cocktail bar in the world. It has an Alan Whicker interior of bamboo
and chinese silks, and the drinks are outrageous. Although be warned,
they look better than they taste!
Restaurants
Sitges is blessed with a large number
of quality restaurants and cafés serving a variety of cuisines
made from local produce. However, if you're staying in an apartment,
you must try shopping in the local municipal market next to the
railway station. There are some good menu del dia options
in Sitges, though we would warn you against eating in restaurants
that have photographs of the food!
The Beach House Cafe, Cocktail
Bar and Restaurant
New, fresh and exciting food for Sitges. 4 course Menu for 19.90%u20AC
changes daily. The best English Breakfast in town served till 4pm.
Very popular 2%u20AC cocktails daily from 4-8pm. Great service which
is rare in Sitges and fantastic food make the Beach House definitely
worth a visit. Go early because it is always full. www.beachhousesitges.com
A great local favourite is El Cellar Vell (Sant
Bonaventura) which serves some of the best steaks in Sitges and
fabulous seafood too. Its brightly lit inside, but the lunchtime
menu for 10€ including wine cannot be beaten.
Another restaurant which attracts a lot of girls is Monty's,
a great Italian located on the seafront (Passeig de la Ribera).
The restaurant specialises in reasonably-priced pasta dishes and
the vegetarian options are very good too.
Yet another favourite is Pescaditos
on 1er de Maig. Popular with locals and visitors alike, it features
some of the best seafood tapas and has tables outside too. Just
a stone's throw from the Med it is a refreshing break from the beach.
Lots of boys and girls take lunch at the Picnic Restaurant
which overlooks the gay beach and is great for the view. The food
is not the best Sitges has to offer, but the bocadillos (large baguettes
filled with a variety of cheeses and meats) are great!
For a bit of romance try Al Fresco on atmospheric
Carrer Pau Barrabeitg - perfect for a romantic meal in their small
but beautiful Gaudi-esque garden. This top-class restaurant - probably
one of the best in Sitges - is extremely popular (reservation recommended),
providing an eclectic range of Mediterranean and fusion dishes.
The Café Al Fresco on nearby Carrer Major
is open during the day serving breakfasts, delicious salads, cakes
and pastries and other snacks.
Alma's Restaurant on Carrer Tacó is also
highly recommended and specialises in superb French cuisine.
For a harbour view and linen tablecloths try the upmarket La
Fragata at the end of Passeig de la Ribera directly below
the Church. Close to Sant Sebastià beach is the Bonanza,
which is very girl-friendly, and Bar Buena Vida,
a cool café bar with lots of sun (open till 10pm).
Beaches
The main gay beach in Sitges is
right in the very centre of town. Platja de la Bassa Rodona
in front of the Picnic Bar is very popular with women, as is Platja
Balmins, the gay nudist beach, between Sant Sebastià
and the port of Aiguadolç.
Clubs
Most clubs in Sitges open late.
However, Bourbons and Mediterraneo,
both of which are, strictly speaking, music bars on Carrer Bonaventura,
open earlier and are also good fun. Bourbon's is dark and intimate,
while Mediterraneo on two floors is larger and more dance-orientated.
Organic Club on Carrer Bonaire opens from 2.30am
to 6am and is a great mixed club. They also run the Gay Beach Party
club night at L'Atlantida. This is the closest
Sitges gets to an energized club night, and it is literally on the
beach. Expect lots of boys and girls.
For club purists there is Pacha. The Sitges Pacha
was the very first to exist and if you have never been to a Pacha
before, it is well worth it, although as with all big name clubs
beware the drink prices.
Hotels
Most hotels in Sitges are gay friendly.
In particular for girls try the El Cid (Carrer
Sant Josep), Hostal Bonaire, and the Romantic
Hotel (Carrer Sant Isidre).
Also good fun is the Campsite up at El
Roca, who also provide chalets.
Apartments
More information for girls can be obtained from girlsinsitges@hotmail.com
who also rent out rooms for women only in shared apartments
BARCELONA
Just 25 minutes away on the train, you have to visit Barcelona,
one of the best queer destinations in Europe. Whether it's for culture,
museums, the art or the music, Barcelona is a truly fabulous place.
There is not a clearly demarked gay area in Barcelona. Café
society is to be found in El Born, and the big gay clubs in the
Eixample district.
Bars
Bar Dot is in the El Born area of the Barri Gotic,
the trendiest neighbourhood in Barcelona right now. Other bars include
Gimlet or Pitin for a mixed sophisticated
crowd. Café de la Calle is a classic girls'
venue (C/Vic 11) and for information try Complices,
a great gay bookshop and info centre on C/Casp 38
Clubs
If you're into clubbing aim for Aire, the largest
lesbian club night in Barcelona. every Friday and Saturday (C/Valencia).
Then try the new club night Pigalle, every Thursday
at Balmes, 90.
Accommodation
Finally, if you fancy hotel service try the new all gay Hotel
Axel, a great addition to Barcelona's accommodation options.
